“Should I drink Biguerlai Tea when I am Pregnant?’

No TeaResponding to a recent post on our Blog warning people of the dangers and risks of drinking Biguerlai Tea, we received this question:

“I’m 1 month pregnant, is it still safe to drink the tea?”

Our response is to resend what was said in the first paragraph of our original blog:“I have to ask why do people do that… to compromise their health for a short-term weight loss goal? People seeking online for solutions to constipation can find more natural and safer options than taking Biguerlai Tea. We encourage you to keep looking.”

Published in the July 2005 issue of “The Annals of Pharmacotherapy. Senna is the ingredient found in the Biguerlai Slimming Tea she was drinking. Biguerlai Tea comes from the Philippines and can be used to effectively treat constipation; but the side effects out weighs its use for any type of weight loss by causing abdominal cramping, discomfort, diarrhea and nausea, according to Drugs.com. They also report that it’s possible to suffer an allergic reaction to senna; side effects including: hives, itching, tightness in your chest, difficulty breathing, or a swollen mouth, tongue, face or lips. Several case studies indicate that chronic senna use may cause severe liver damage.

There is a sickness mentality that breeds “relief only” mindsets that says, whatever I can do immediately to reduce my discomfort is justified. My main concern is the false or misleading advertising that Bigerlai Tea does every day on the Radio in Manila…. that it is safe to drink their product because it is natural with NO Side Effects. Lots of people have responded to us, some were posted, that they suffered plenty of side effects, so that claim is false. Sad to see how companies are seldom held accountable for their false or misleading advertising.More importantly than this particular product that I DO NOT ENDORSE is the lack of public education on natural health care options. Ever notice how birds will eat some fruits or berries and leave other trees alone? Dumb birds already know that just because something comes from nature it doesn’t mean it is not poison. We know that we can eat some mushrooms but not all mushrooms are safe to eat.Natural is often referred to as the opposite of synthetic and that is a helpful distinction but there are plenty of products that are considered “natural’ but when you look at it the processing of natural foods alters their state and therefore they are no longer truly natural. Take fruit juice for example. How many oranges does it take to make 8 oz glass of juice? It takes four medium sized oranges but when you juice it, you only get the sugar and water parts. When you eat all the four oranges you get the fiber and other micro-nutrients needed to metabolize that amount of juice, which you don’t get from juice alone; so the juice is an adulterated form of liquid, relatively high in sugar, but it is no longer in its natural state. We do recommend the juicing of fruits and vegetables when used to supplement one’s good eating habits; but that is different than a morning glass of orange juice. In closing, when someone is pregnant, they are advised to not take medications and that is good advice, even when not pregnant, except as a last resort. Senna, in it’s processed form is like a drug so just stay away from it.yours in Health,
docMIKE
