UST Medical Student Assembly on Alternatives

UST Medical Student Assembly on Alternatives

As part of the University of Santo Thomas’ Medical Student’s training program they created a day dedicated to Alternative Health Services, such as Chiropractic, Acupuncture, Herbology and Massage. They searched for Chiropractic online and discovered Mabuhay Chiropractic. Upon contacting our marketing department they presented their invitation to address their 2nd year Medical Student Class on the topic of Chiropractic.

On Friday, November 18th, 2016 Mark Robson, spokesman for Mabuhay Chiropractic Clinics, presented a dynamic and inspiring session to the UST Medical Students.

ust-1

Topics ranged from the history, Philosophy and techniques of chiropractic; the education, value and benefits; working relationships with the medical profession and integration of chiropractic as a valuable primary health care provider in society. Some demonstrations were shown at the end of the session showing how we examined the spine and demonstrating how muscles weakened even with head positioning compromising existing nerve pressure from subluxations. (no actual spinal adjusting was demonstrated).

Overall it was a well received presentation and the attendants remained highly engaged throughout the entire session. This was a valuable educational outreach into the Manila community promoting the brand of Mabuhay Chiropractic providing better understanding of who we are, what we do and the value and benefits for everyone.

ust-2

As a progressive sign of patient centered care, it is important for medical students to better understand the role of alternative practitioners. Today’s healthcare environment has evolved form the days when the doctor was expected to have all the answers.  The age of information and technology brings anatomy and physiology and pathology to the everyday person through the internet. Doctors today are expected to know why their patients seek alternatives to medications and surgery.

Since the chiropractic is the world’s largest non-drug and nonsurgical profession, the public should expect their family doctors to have a working knowledge of chiropractic and other alternative healthcare professions.

President Duterte’s Neck Problem

President Duterte’s Neck Problem

President Duterte is frequently seen on TV being interviewed or making speeches and he has what may seem to some as a nervous tic on the right side of his neck. Looking at this interview photo we see, as we see so many times, how he props up the right side of his head.

pres-duterte-neck As a spinal expert I see that as a sign of cervical instability. Chiropractors learn a lot about body biomechanics, biochemistry, physiology above most other physicians in order to perform our duty as holistic, naturalistic and vitalistic doctors in the care of our patients. One such focus is body positioning.

I propose that one day President Duterte will undergo a full and proper chiropractic evaluaton, and once the underlying neck problem is identified, we may look for this physical behavior to improve and for the President to have a healthy neck again.

As I often walk through malls, having several of our clinics located in malls like Mall of Asia, Glorietta, SM Bacoor, Robinsons Place, etc. I take note of the way people walk and of their personal posture. In our blog on posture I am quoted as saying: “As the eyes are the mirror to your soul, Posture is the mirror to your health.” As people are seen in their everyday activities it becomes clear to the trained eye what structural problems or dysfunctions are present.

One day the Philippines will have a College of Chiropractic so that bright young men and women can study locally to stay and help their country’s advancing disability concerns. One day the Philippines will have a law on Chiropractic to recognise who is a qualified chiropractor and stop the many fake chiropractors from making false claims and putting the public at risk. One day chiropractors will be found in every city and barangay in the country.

Perhaps if President Duterte becomes familiar with the chiropractic profession first hand that there will be others who will become interested in helping to grow this profession, so badly needed in the Philippines and other developing countries.

Yours in Real Life,
docMIKE

Fat Vs. Thin Imagery Worth Seeing

Fat Vs. Thin imagery worth seeing

fat-mriAs America is about to celebrate its annual Thanksgiving Holiday this month and as there are 101 reasons to retouch this topic, people really need to confront the reality that being fat is not good for your health. Governments are stepping up the aversion factors in cigarette labelling requiring pictures of lung cancer to be displayed on the outer packaging of cigarette boxes. Imagine if we really looked the same economic and disease reality of obesity, as we do tobacco, what would the food labels of tomorrow look like? An interesting thought. Continue reading

Leg pain and the Piriformis Syndrome

Leg pain and the Piriformis Syndrome

Slipped disks, pinched nerves and misaligned vertebra or twisted pelvis are commonly associated with leg pain. The one cause that is often overlooked is the Piriformis Syndrome.

Often, when a patient presents themselves to a doctor with this kind of leg pain the examination is limited to the lumbar spine. Big mistake! The pelvis is frequently involved either directly or indirectly as a complicating factor in leg pain conditions; and this includes the piriformis muscle. Continue reading

Mabuhay Chiropractic Angels

Chiropractic Angels

On the anniversary of the Tetrault’s 10th year in the Philippines, noted by Mabuhay Chiropractic Clinics opening the doors of its 6th branch at the Mall Of Asia (MOA) on Nov 1st, one of our chiropractic angels dropped by to give us a cheer and encouragement.
That was Belle!

moa-facade

That made me think about the fact that we have several chiropractic angels like Belle. There are our longstanding CAs like Bernalin, Judy, Gemma and coming behind is Wheng. Also on that list are docMIKE’s former Executive Assistants Sixteen Ramos and Princess Lagman; and we can’t mention Princess without adding Gerwin Nables. Last but not least, to make the list of 10 complete, there is the first angel Mme. Apple and starter of all, docMIKE. Continue reading

Harvard Anti-aging Study says 150 years

Harvard anti-aging study says 150 years now

anti-agingA recent release on anti aging refers to the Harvard Anti-Aging Study on longevity claims that people can live until they are 150 years of age. Earlier claims at longevity stopped at 120 but since there are people in recent history that have lived beyond this, the boundary is being pushed further.

Yes, there are lots of people talking about longevity, but mostly they are selling or promoting one product or the other. Chiropractic as a profession has long been a proponent of longevity, and not because of any technique or product to promote. Chiropractic works with the underlying causes of health, the empowerment to achieve a lofty goal of 100 years and more. Continue reading

Guard and Guide Yourself to Health

Guard and Guide Yourself to Health

Yes2Starting the blog with this famous quote we can begin to understand the title itself:  “My problems are the result of doing too many of the WRONG things and not enough of the RIGHT things.” GUARD your health by avoiding all the wrong things and GUIDE your health by doing all the right things.”

Last week we discussed re-framing how we view symptoms and that not all symptoms are necessarily bad and not having any symptoms does not mean we are healthy either. This is asking people to rethink many things they thought they got right about life and health but actually have enough of a misunderstanding that it impacts their present and future health. Re-thinking is a good thing when we see it that way! Continue reading

Boost Your Immune System with Chiropractic

Boost Your Immune System with Chiropractic

It is a common but false belief to say that you are healthy just because you have no symptoms. Actually being healthy and symptom free are not the same thing; and alternatively, just because you have symptoms, it doesn’t mean you are sick.

Someone suddenly experiences a heart attack! It’s the first time they have that symptom but were they healthy while they still had so symptoms? Same is true for Diabetes type 2; it doesn’t suddenly show up. A person has to have been unwell for a decade before they were diagnosed with Diabetes or heart disease. Continue reading

Gadget Apps and Posture Co-morbidities

Gadget Apps and Posture Co-morbidities

techneckA recent sampling of a group of young people in their twenties confirmed what I feared could happen and it is happening. Posture problems are getting worse and affecting an even larger percentage of the population, especially the children. What’s behind it? What could be having such a broad-based negative influence on so many people? Continue reading

Metabolic Syndrome Stage 2 Vs Stage 3

Metabolic Syndrome Stage 2 Vs Stage 3

Metabolic Syndrome SeriesThis is session 3 of 3 that we are writing on a series introducing a health focus concept revolving around the term or state of the body’s metabolic status otherwise referred to as Metabolic Syndrome (MSy). There are 5 stages to MSy and we will contrast Stage 2 and 3 this week to conclude the series. We advise you to read the previous blogs on Stage 0 Vs Stage 5 and Stage 1 Vs Stage 4.

Stage 2 – Metabolic Syndrome
(Health profile is a 6 – 7 out of 10)

At this stage people already starting to become unwell and unhealthy from time to time. Annual Physical Exams show 1 or 2 reoccurring abnormal test results. It now seems easier to get sick and longer to recover. One way to put it is that you don’t yet see yourself as a sickly person, but you don’t see yourself as a healthy person either any more. Continue reading
