Gadget Apps and Posture Co-morbidities

Gadget Apps and Posture Co-morbidities

techneckA recent sampling of a group of young people in their twenties confirmed what I feared could happen and it is happening. Posture problems are getting worse and affecting an even larger percentage of the population, especially the children. What’s behind it? What could be having such a broad-based negative influence on so many people?

Gadgets! Not the gadgets themselves, but the rapid advancements in applications that gets so many lives entirely wrapped around the smart phone, tablets, laptops and smart watches. This “not-so-smart” lifestyle is breeding an epidemic and an addiction by being near-constantly plugged in and it’s raking havoc on our posture and on our health.

Young and not-so-young people are presenting themselves today with an increase in complaints about shoulder pain. This is not shoulder pain, it is shoulder girdle muscle related problems that complicate existing spinal misalignments and accelerate cervical disc degeneration, cervical origin headaches and associated brachial plexus neuropathies, radiculopathies, arm and hand pains and numbness.

The posture challenges traditionally observed were seen to increase when scoliosis was part of the person’s developmental history. The significance of poor posture becomes relevant when we think about how many healthy people we know with poor posture… almost none. Truth is posture is just the shadow of something more sinister, how the nervous system is compromised by the underlying causes of poor posture; all related to spine and nerves.

Couple with the fact that nobody can live a very physical life as they stay plugged into their gadgets. The resulting inactivity is spurring another deathly complex disease, the doubling and tripling of Diabetes type 2 incidences.

What does this message imply? We all need to pay attention to this phenomenon and look at ways to improve the physical, postural habits we subject our bodies to, for hours upon hours of time. It’s your choice!

Yours in Health,
docMIKE

Metabolic Syndrome Stage 2 Vs Stage 3

Metabolic Syndrome Stage 2 Vs Stage 3

Metabolic Syndrome SeriesThis is session 3 of 3 that we are writing on a series introducing a health focus concept revolving around the term or state of the body’s metabolic status otherwise referred to as Metabolic Syndrome (MSy). There are 5 stages to MSy and we will contrast Stage 2 and 3 this week to conclude the series. We advise you to read the previous blogs on Stage 0 Vs Stage 5 and Stage 1 Vs Stage 4.

Stage 2 – Metabolic Syndrome
(Health profile is a 6 – 7 out of 10)

At this stage people already starting to become unwell and unhealthy from time to time. Annual Physical Exams show 1 or 2 reoccurring abnormal test results. It now seems easier to get sick and longer to recover. One way to put it is that you don’t yet see yourself as a sickly person, but you don’t see yourself as a healthy person either any more. Metabolic Syndrome Stage 1 Vs Stage 4

Metabolic Syndrome Stage 1 Vs Stage 4

Metabolic Syndrome seriesThis is session 2 of 3 that we are writing on a series introducing a health focus concept revolving around the state of the body’s metabolic status otherwise referred to as Metabolic Syndrome (MSy). There are 5 stages to MSy and we will contrast Stage 1 and 4 this week, then Stage 2 and 3 next week.

Stage 1 – Metabolic Syndrome
(Health profile is 8 – 9 out of 10)

This state is just short of being a ‘10’ in health. A typical health focused person doesn’t have to worry about getting sick because they have strong reserves from a strong metabolism to support their body. However, good health is fleeting when time works against people with poor lifestyle habits. People begin their decline during this stage as there is a lack of awareness that their health is not a given, that health is not guaranteed. They experience health because of an uneventful childhood and begin their adult life in good to great health. Continue reading

Metabolic Syndrome: Stage Zero Vs Stage Five

Metabolic Syndrome: Stage Zero Vs Stage Five

Vitruvian man on old paper backgroundThese next few weeks we are writing on a series introducing a health focus concept revolving around the term or state of the body’s metabolic status otherwise referred to as Metabolic Syndrome (MSy). There are 5 stages to MSy and we will contrast Stage 0 and 5 this week; Stage 1 and 4 next week and Stage 2 and 3 the following week.

Stage Zero Metabolic Syndrome
(Health profile is 10 out of 10)

Plainly speaking, this is just expressing health in abundance. This is the state in which, whatever is experienced by the body throughout the day, there is a timely and full restoration of the body systems; a repair of the cells and replenishing of the reserves needed to maintain and preserve the body within nature’s best timeline. Scoliosis Perspective

Scoliosis Perspective

Scoliosis may be functional or congenital

Treatment of scoliosis, the lateral curving of the spine in an ‘S’ shape, is commonly misunderstood. The first thing to understand is that this is not a dreaded disease that medical scare tactics have forced many into undergoing spinal surgery. Second, spinal experts agree that a cure for scoliosis is not possible. To suggest this is irresponsible.

The ideal process to best manage scoliosis is early identification at the ages of 8 or 9 for advanced cases and at the ages of 10 to 12 when the prominent scapula or shoulder blade does not show at earlier ages. Early and proper evaluation will classify how mild, moderate or severe we may expect the projected advancement of the lateral curves. The principal spinal management options that have passed clinical and scientific scrutiny include exercise, chiropractic care, bracing and spinal surgery. All three options focus on reducing the rate of advancement or progression of the curve angles. Continue reading

Parlor sink Radiculopathy

Parlor sink Radiculopathy

lordosis-cervicalMartha Welling has become self-conscious about the way her hair has looked these days so she has visited her hair dresser more often – like almost weekly. She then started to experience an increase in neck pains, pain and numbness running down her arm and an in crease in headaches. These are signs of parlor sink radiculopathy. All these problems had already been successfully controlled by earlier chiropractic care, so she wondered if there was a connection between her increase parlor visits and the return of these problems. Good call, Martha!

Is your hair salon causing that pain in your neck? Frequent visits to the parlor for shampooing or blow drying may be aggravating your neck to due stress to the joints of the neck contributing to arthritic pain. Salon sinks may be the cause because it requires the positioning of the neck in a slight hyper extended position. Continue reading

Course Corrections in Life

health_actionsWellness is the “pursuit of health lost” and at some point in time many people recognize that somewhere in life they got off course and they are unhappy with where they are. That is understandable yet it seems they get stuck in making lasting changes and keep ending up where they are, again. The reason is that they have not properly assessed where they were, where they are and finally where they see that they should be. To get from “here” (today’s unwelcome reality) to “there” (where you see things should be)  you have to leave “here” in order to get “there”… and that is the rub, the challenge, the problem, the withhold.
